Second in Line: Vehicles Exports Cools
The mirror this cycle tilts on a single pivot. Vehicles under HS87 shed €253.1B in exports year-over-year across the 27 EU reporters, a -5.6% contraction that reads less like turbulence and more like a sector exhaling.
Mineral fuels and oils moved further, of course. HS27 imports fell €589.3B, -13.8%, the loudest line in the ledger. That is the number people will quote. But the vehicles print is the one I keep returning to, because a fuel bill compresses when prices soften — an export book compresses when demand hesitates.
The counterweight arrives from HS71. Precious stones and metals imports climbed €127.5B, +28.4%, capital finding a denser resting place while the industrial lines thin. Read the three together and you get a portrait of a bloc buying less energy, exporting fewer cars, and quietly parking value in something that does not rust.
Germany's seasonal shape frames the vehicles story cleanly. HS87 exports into DE peak in March at index 1.133 and trough in December at 0.734, averaged over 2021 through 2025. The calendar always breathes; the question is whether this year's breath is shallower than the calendar alone would predict.
July reads 0.997. The seasonal pattern sits almost exactly on its baseline, which means volume this month offers little directional steer. Whatever pressure the -5.6% annual print is transmitting, it is not being amplified or muted by seasonality right now — it is arriving unfiltered.
My interpretation, offered as a flow reading and nothing firmer: the data points toward continued downward pressure on European vehicles export throughput, with the HS71 bid suggesting the capital that once financed that throughput is choosing a different shelf.
