Reading the Seasons: When Mineral fuels and oils Moves

The mirror is tilting hard this cycle, and the largest movement sits exactly where you would expect gravity to pull it: mineral fuels and oils, HS27, imports across all 27 EU reporters down €589.3B year-over-year, a contraction of -13.8% from 2024 into 2025. That is not a rounding artifact. That is a continent recalibrating what it burns.

The export side moved in sympathy — HS27 outbound fell €339.5B, -14.7% over the same window. When both legs of a trade compress together, you are watching demand and throughput recede in the same breath, not a substitution between partners. The barrels, the molecules, the invoices — all of it thinner.

The counter-current is worth naming. Precious stones and metals, HS71, imports rose €127.5B, +28.4%. Capital is moving somewhere while combustion retreats. I will not tell you what that means for the next quarter. I will tell you the two flows are pointing in opposite directions with conviction.

Now, seasonality. Germany's HS27 imports peak in August at index 1.121 and trough in February at 0.884, averaged across 2021–2025. That is the physical rhythm of a heating-and-industrial economy — winter buys ahead, summer restocks for winter, February exhales.

For July, the index reads 1.05. Near baseline. The season is not shouting this month; it is neither leaning into the August peak nor sagging toward the February floor. The flow reading points toward upward pressure on volume as we roll into August, which is where the seasonal weight actually lives — but this is a reading of the mirror, not a call on the tape.
